Gwagwalada Speaker and Aide killed in Abuja-Lokoja Highway crash

The Speaker of the Gwagwalada Area Council Legislative Arm, Hon. Mohammed Ibrahim Ibwa, and his aide Ibrahim Ibwa died after a head-on crash on the Abuja-Lokoja highway near Sheda village on Wednesday afternoon.

The accident happened around 3:10 p.m. when a Mercedes-Benz and a Sino truck collided.

Three people were in the car at the time. One survived and is still being treated in hospital.

The aide died at the scene. The Speaker was first taken to Legend Hospital in Gwagwalada, then transferred to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital, where he died in the early hours of Thursday.

Officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident and said rescue teams moved the victims to nearby hospitals. One person was confirmed dead on the spot, while the others were taken for care.

One body was later deposited at the Gwagwalada mortuary.

The Speaker and his aides were returning to Gwagwalada from a political meeting in Kwali when the crash occurred near Sheda village.

Ibwa was buried according to Islamic rites in his hometown, Ibwa community in Gwagwalada Area Council. Political leaders attended, including the chairman-elect of Gwagwalada Area Council, former council officials, and other stakeholders.

Senator Philip Aduda, who is running for the FCT APC senatorial ticket, visited the family to offer condolences. He called the deaths painful, said the Speaker served with dedication and humility, and urged the families to stay strong during the mourning period.
