Gunmen stormed the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat in Damaturu, Yobe State, in the early hours of Friday, September 19, 2025, leaving a police officer seriously injured.
The attack, which occurred around 2 a.m. has heightened fears about the safety of journalists working in Nigeria’s troubled northeast.
Witnesses said the assailants shot the officer assigned to guard the building in the leg before escaping the scene.
The wounded officer was quickly rushed to the Police Hospital in Damaturu, where he is receiving treatment.
Reacting to the incident, NUJ Yobe Council chairman, Rajab Ismail Mohammed, described the development as “unfortunate and scary,” stressing that it was not just an attack on security personnel but also an attempt to intimidate the press.
“This attack represents not just an assault on a security guard but an intimidation tactic against the press corps in Yobe State,” Mohammed said.
Mohammed said: “We call on security agencies to immediately launch a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
