The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 10,210 personnel and elite tactical units to Osun State ahead of the governorship election, as part of a nationwide push to secure a peaceful, free and credible poll.

The massive deployment, ordered by the Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Audi, commenced on Monday and is aimed at protecting voters, electoral officials, election materials, observers, journalists and residents from threats and electoral violence.

According to a statement by the Corps’ National Public Relations Officer, AC Babawale Afolabi, 10,000 personnel were drawn from 10 neighbouring commands to reinforce the Osun State Command.

About 1,000 personnel each were mobilised from Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, Lagos, Kwara, Edo, Kogi, Delta and the FCT. The contingent includes both uniformed and undercover operatives who will work alongside the Police, military and other agencies under the inter-agency security framework.

—Specialised Units Activated—

In addition to the conventional deployment, Audi activated several specialised formations, including:
– CG’s Special Intelligence Squad
– Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit
– Specialised Female Squad
– Mining Marshals
– *Special Strike Force
– *Crack Squad
– *K9 Unit

The Corps said the units will focus on intelligence gathering, crime prevention, protection of critical assets, crowd control and other election-related operations.

To ensure tight supervision, DCG Ayuba Phillip, in charge of Operations, alongside designated Assistant Commandants General and other senior officers, have relocated to Osun State to coordinate the Corps’ activities.

—“We Will Be Professional and Neutral”—

Audi assured residents of the Corps’ commitment to professionalism, impartiality and respect for citizens’ rights.

“Our personnel have been properly briefed on the need to be professional, neutral and respectful in the discharge of their duties,” he said.

He issued a stern warning to political thugs and criminal elements planning to disrupt the election.

“In collaboration with other security agencies on election duty, we will not tolerate any activity intended to jeopardise the election process. Criminal-minded persons and political thugs willing to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the election would face the wrath of the law as prescribed in the Electoral Act,” Audi warned.

—Coverage Across 30 LGAs—

The NSCDC said its operations will cover all 30 Local Government Areas of Osun State in coordination with the Nigeria Police Force, the military and other sister agencies.

The Corps also appealed to political parties, candidates and supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and urged residents to remain calm, vigilant and report suspicious activities to authorities.

The deployment comes as security agencies intensify preparations to prevent violence, intimidation and other disruptions that could undermine the credibility of the Osun governorship election.
