• Technical committee meets in Abuja to strategize on joint taskforce
In a determined effort to instil order in Nigeria’s mining sector, the Federal Government, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has initiated a comprehensive approach to address the pressing issue of illegal mining.
On Tuesday, January 30, 2024, the technical committee, mandated by the Federal Government to establish a joint taskforce, convened in Abuja at the behest of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
In a statement, the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the Committee gathering, hosted at the Police Force Headquarters, saw the participation of representatives from key entities, including the Armed Forces, Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ministry of Solid Minerals, Environment, and various other relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
He added that the primary objective of the proposed Taskforce is multi-faceted, targeting the eradication of illegal mining activities conducted by both foreign nationals and Nigerians alike.
Key focus areas include bolstering security in mining regions, enforcing mining regulations, overseeing proper warehousing, and monitoring explosives while simultaneously advancing environmental sustainability in mining operations.
Adejobi said the collaboration underscores the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force, security forces, and other involved MDAs in supporting the Federal Government’s agenda.
This initiative aligns with the broader goals of economic recovery, growth, and the socio-political development of Nigeria.
He reiterated the unwavering dedication of the Nigeria Police Force and allied security forces to contribute to the nation’s progress.
Adejobi said the commitment extends towards ensuring a secure and regulated mining environment as a crucial component of Nigeria’s developmental aspirations.
