Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of 22 lives in a fatal road accident involving members of the state’s contingent returning from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.

The victims—primarily young athletes, coaches, and officials—were traveling back to Kano when their bus reportedly veered off a bridge along the Kano–Zaria expressway, resulting in the death of 22 people and leaving several others critically injured.

In a statement issued by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, Governor Yusuf extended his condolences to the grieving families and the entire sporting community.

To honor the victims and offer collective prayers, the state government has declared Monday, 2nd June 2025, as a public holiday.

The governor, currently in Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage, described the accident as a dark and painful moment for the entire state. He called on residents to remain united and supportive as the state mourns the devastating loss.

“It is with a deeply saddened heart that I received the tragic news of the incident which claimed the lives of 22 innocent citizens and left many others injured.

“We mourn with the affected families and stand with them during this very difficult time,” Governor Yusuf said.

He further directed that special prayers be held across mosques in Kano and urged Muslim faithful within and outside the state to remember the departed in their prayers.

The governor also assured that the state government is taking necessary steps to support the injured and assist the families of the deceased.

“This public holiday is not only to mourn but also to reflect and pray for those we have lost. May Allah grant them eternal rest and give their families the strength to bear this huge loss,” the statement concluded.
