Gov. Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, has called for stronger collaboration between Nigeria and the United States (U.S.) to tackle the current security challenges in some parts of the country.
The governor spoke at a dialogue on Peace and Security in Nigeria, organised by the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), in Washington DC, U.S.
This is contained in a statement by Mr Gyang Bere, the governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, issued on Wednesday in Jos.
The governor was part of delegation of the Nigerian governors participating in the event.
Mutfwang also commended the pragmatic leadership style of President Bola Tinubu, toward addressing the myriad of security challenges in the country.
”The President has shown the political will in addressing the security challenges that his administration inherited in the country.
”We are appealing to citizens and the security agencies to redouble their efforts in the discharg of their constitutional responsibility.
”We commend the U.S. Government, particularly the USIP, for its support through various interventions, especially those focused on strengthening the capacity of peace actors through the Nigerian Network of Facilitators.
”The lessons learned will be deployed toward addressing the lingering security challenges in Plateau and Nigeria in general,”Bere quoted the governor.
Earlier, Dr. Joseph Sany, the Vice President of the Africa Centre, USIP, thanked the governors for attending the dialogue and urged them to apply the lessons learned in their respective states.
He said that the theme of the event, “Drivers of Insecurity and Opportunities for Stabilisation”, aimed at deepening understanding of the security context, the socio-economic dimensions and identifying near-term opportunities toward addressing instability across the globe.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other governors present at the dialogue include, Sen. Uba Sani, Abba Yusuf, Nasir Idris and Umar Namadi of Kaduna, Kano, kebbi and Jigawa states, respectively.
Other governors who attended the dialogue were Dauda Lawal, Hyacinth Alia, Mohammed Bago of Zamfara, Benue and Niger States, as well as the Deputy governor of Sokoto state.(NAN)
