Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has welcomed 1,950 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to Bayelsa, assuring them of a safe, hospitable, and opportunity-rich environment to thrive during their mandatory one-year national service.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony for the 2025 Batch B, Stream 2 corps members on Friday at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Boro Town, Diri encouraged the young graduates to seize the state’s potential to enhance their personal and professional lives.
Governor Diri, represented by his Executive Assistant on NYSC Matters, Dr. Wisdom Poyeri, described the corps members’ deployment in Bayelsa as a divine opportunity to achieve greatness.
“Your presence here is no coincidence but a purposeful plan to position you for success in the glory of all lands,” Diri said.
He highlighted Bayelsa’s fertile ground for creativity and enterprise, urging the corps members to tap into the state’s abundant opportunities to become “better and richer versions of themselves” during and beyond their service year.
Diri commended the corps members for their academic excellence and moral character, which earned them a place in the prestigious NYSC scheme.
“You are among the vibrant youths found worthy in character and learning to serve our nation.”
He emphasised the importance of maintaining high standards of discipline, integrity, and patriotism, noting that their actions would shape not only their reputations but also their future prospects.
“The world is watching, and the virtues that brought you here must shine even brighter.”
The governor encouraged the corps members to view challenges as opportunities for growth, urging them to make meaningful contributions to their host communities.
“Every great achievement begins with a single step. This service year is a foundation to learn from every situation, grow through every encounter, and leave a lasting impact.”
He stressed the NYSC’s role in fostering national unity and called on the corps members to promote peace and progress across Bayelsa’s communities.
Diri expressed deep appreciation to the NYSC leadership and staff for their tireless efforts in sustaining the scheme’s relevance and impact.
“Through your work, the NYSC continues to shape the futures of young Nigerians and produce leaders who will steer our country to greater heights.”
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the NYSC, assuring the corps members of robust state backing and warm hospitality throughout their service year.
The governor also extended an invitation to the corps members to embrace Bayelsa’s rich cultural heritage and traditions.
“Immerse yourselves in the beauty of our land and build bonds of friendship that will last a lifetime.”
Diri expressed hope that some corps members would find a sense of belonging in Bayelsa, potentially laying down roots to build fulfilling careers or even start families in the state.
In her welcome address, NYSC State Coordinator Mrs. Okpalifo Obiageli Charity thanked Governor Diri for his unwavering support and urged the corps members to approach the service year with utmost seriousness.
She outlined the objectives of the orientation course, which is designed to equip the 1,950 corps members deployed to Bayelsa with the skills and mindset needed for optimal performance.
Okpalifo also appealed for the early completion of the female hostel under construction at the camp, a project supported by the state government.
Okpalifo cautioned the corps members against engaging in social vices or actions that could tarnish the NYSC’s reputation, both during the orientation course and at their places of primary assignment.
She expressed gratitude to the governor, collaborating partners, and distinguished guests for their presence at the ceremony, underscoring the importance of their support in ensuring the success of the NYSC programme in Bayelsa.
