- Gov Bago on his knees before President Tinubu
Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago has visited the Presidential Villa and knelt before President Bola Tinubu like a repentant prodigal son after his political indiscretion of publicly supporting an opposition leader’s criticism of Tinubu’s government.
Bago is a governor on the platform of the All Progressives Congress [APC]
Two days after the governor publicly aligned with, and praised the Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for criticising Nigeria for receiving donations of grains from war-torn Ukraine and also urged Tinubu administration to make Nigeria productive, Bago was at the State House to visit President Tinubu.
Perhaps realising his faux pas, he decided to disarm TInubu like the prodigal son did in the Bible after wasting his substance in riotous living in a foreign land: he went down on his knees to greet the president.
Although, it could not be confirmed what exactly transpired or the leit motif of the public spectacle in the Presidential Villa, but watchers of political developments in Nigeria were quick to insinuate Bago’s support for Peter Obi’s criticism of Nigeria under Tinubu as the mischief that escaped.
Recall that Bago had publicly praised Peter Obi and called him ‘my boss’ at the LEADERSHIP 2023 Conference and Awards which held on March 5, 2024, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotels, Abuja.
His words: “My boss, you are very right on what you’ve said. We have no reason to be poor. People may not like you, but they must hear you. What you say is the gospel truth.
“It is time we tell [sic] ourselves the basic truth. We need to feed ourselves. It is a shame for people [sic] like Ukraine in war to be giving us food.
“Nigeria needs to be productive. You cannot be out of poverty unless you start to produce. I’m not an advocate of handouts and palliative. I don’t believe in it.”
