The Ghana High Commission in Nigeria has extended an invitation to Nigerians to consider pursuing their university education in Ghana, highlighting that the West African nation provides more affordable tuition options compared to many private universities in Nigeria.
During a presentation in Abuja at the 2023/2024 On-Spot-Admissions Screening for the University of Ghana, Deputy High Commissioner of Ghana to Nigeria, Eddison Mensah Agbenyegah, emphasized, “While the cost of education varies among universities, studying in Ghana might present a more cost-effective choice for Nigerian students than certain other countries, particularly when compared to tuition fees at private universities in Nigeria.”
Delving into the topic of “Advantages of Enrolling in Ghanaian Higher Education Institutions,” the envoy noted, “Numerous options exist for pursuing education, but Ghana stands out as one of the premier destinations for academic endeavors in the African continent.
“Universities in Ghana boast expansive campuses, well-constructed facilities, and rigorous educational standards.
“The expense associated with education in Ghana is notably lower than the cost of living in developed nations, offering abundant prospects for young individuals to shape their careers following graduation.”
He further highlighted, “This academic year, the prestigious University of Ghana – Legon, along with various other Ghanaian universities, has initiated the application process for West African students. Specifically, the University of Ghana has implemented reduced tuition fees for all ECOWAS students since the 2021/2022 academic year. Additionally, students can now pay in Naira at Access Bank Nigeria, and flexible payment plans have been introduced to ease financial burdens on parents and students.
“Notably, a proposal is currently under consideration, led by Prof. Eric Osei-Assibey of the Dean of International Programmes Office, to further decrease tuition fees for ECOWAS students, taking into account the current economic conditions in Nigeria and other West African countries.
“We will keep all potential parents, students, counselors, examination officers, and facilitators in Nigeria updated once the revised tuition fee proposal is accepted and approved for implementation,” the envoy said.
The envoy underscored several compelling reasons why Ghanaian universities should be regarded as a prime choice for Nigerian students, encompassing the quality of education, diverse programs with international recognition, affordability, secure environment, favorable weather conditions, direct admissions based on relevant WAEC subjects without the need for entrance exams, shared and harmonious culture, English language instruction, geographical proximity, minimal disruptions due to strikes, avenues for networking, exposure to an international setting, and opportunities for scholarships.
