Speaking at a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group in London, a gathering of Kyiv’s Western allies, Pistorius announced that Germany is funding the procurement of long-range drones, which are being manufactured within Ukraine.
“These drones will destroy Russian aircraft, drones, and missiles on the ground before they can pose a threat to Ukraine, its cities, or infrastructure,” Pistorius said.
He added that the first systems financed by Germany would be delivered to the Ukrainian armed forces in the coming days and would be ready for immediate deployment.
On air defence, Pistorius emphasized that Ukraine urgently needs five additional Patriot air defence systems to protect against ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks.
Germany has pledged to supply two Patriot missile systems, originally purchased from the United States. The initial plan was to buy two new systems, each costing around 1 billion euros (1.16 billion dollars) and send them to Ukraine.
However, due to delivery delays, Germany will instead transfer two of its own existing Patriot systems from its current stock of nine, with the understanding that the U.S. will later supply replacements.
