Former Nigeria’s First Lady dies from COVID-19 complications

A former Nigeria’s first lady, Hadiza Shagari, wife of late former President, the late Shehu Shagari, has died from COVID-19 complications. She was aged 80.

Her passing was announced via a statement signed by Capt. Muhammad Bala Shagari (retd).

The news was shared on Facebook by Bello Shagari, a grandson of the late former president.

According to the statement, Hadiza died at the age of 80.

Funeral prayers for the deceased are expected to hold later on Thursday at the National Mosque in Abuja.

“We regret to announce the demise of our beloved mother, Hajiya Hadiza Shehu Shagari, the wife of H.E late President Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, GCFR (Turakin Sokoto),” the statement announcing the death of the former First Lady of Nigeria said.

The statement added: “We lost her in the early hours of today, 12th August 2021, at about 3.00 am, after battling COVID-19 at the Gwagwalada Isolation Centre in Abuja.

“Hajiya Hadiza Shehu Shagari was 80 years old. Her Jana’iza (Funeral Prayer) will take place today, at 4.00 pm, immediately after Asr prayer, at the National Mosque, Abuja.”

Hadiza was first lady of Nigeria during the second Republic between 1979 and 1984.
