Fire razes 25-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House in Lagos

A Christmas Eve fire has engulfed the Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, Lagos Island, destroying goods valued at millions of naira.

The incident, which reportedly began around 5 p.m. on Wednesday, sent occupants and nearby residents fleeing to safety. No casualties had been recorded at the time of filing this report.

Officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, alongside other emergency responders, rushed to the scene to combat the blaze.

Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said firefighters received the emergency call at 4:41 p.m. and arrived at 4:53 p.m.

According to her, the fire started on the fifth floor of the 25-storey building and spread downward, affecting multiple levels.

The building is mainly used for the storage and sale of clothing materials, in addition to hosting corporate offices and a few shops.

Adeseye confirmed that firefighting operations were still ongoing, adding that no loss of life had been reported.
