Fifth batch of stranded Nigerians in Sudan arrives in Abuja

The fifth batch (eighth flight) of 132 stranded Nigerian citizens evacuated by the Federal Government through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the on-going evacuation from the internal conflict in Sudan arrived at the Nnamdi Arzikiwe International Airport on Monday at 9:15am.

This group, which included men, women, and children of all ages, was airlifted via Tarco Aviation from Port Sudan and arrived at Nnamdi Arzikiwe International Airport.

Of particular note among them was a 3-week-old baby.

The returnees were received at the Abuja Airport’s Hajj Terminal by a team of senior civil servants led by the Director of Special Duties, NEMA, Dr Onimode Abdullahi Bandele.

Representatives from various government agencies, including the Head of Consular and Migration Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, NCFRMI, NiDCOM, and NAPTIP, were also present.

After clearing immigration, the returnees were provided with meals and tokens to assist them with travel to their final destinations.

In addition, the Dangote Foundation, a philanthropic organization, distributed tokens worth N100,000 for cashing at a bank and dignity kits to each returnee.

The telecom company MTN gifted each returnee a SIM card with N25,000 worth of airtime and 2GB of data.

During the reception, the returnees expressed their excitement and gratitude for the Federal Government’s successful efforts to airlift them back home to safety and dignity.

They even sang the Nigerian National Anthem to show their appreciation.
