The federal government on Monday began prosecuting social media influencer Justice Chidiebere, known online as Justice Crack, on an amended three-count charge of alleged cybercrime and felony.

Chidiebere appeared before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik at the Federal High Court in Abuja and pleaded not guilty.

The first prosecution witness, Oronto Douglas, told the court he downloaded audio and video recordings of the defendant’s interview onto a flash drive and signed a certificate of compliance.

When the prosecution sought to play the flash drive, defense counsel objected, saying the content could not be verified.

Justice Abdulmalik faulted the prosecution for not requesting a playback device through the court’s IT department.

The prosecution said an application had been made to the deputy chief registrar, but the judge said it should have gone to the head of IT.

Defence counsel asked that the existing bail conditions remain in place. The prosecution did not object, and the court granted the request.

The case was adjourned to September 28 for continuation.
