The Federal Government has announced that Tuesday, July 15, 2025, will be observed as a public holiday across the country in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

This decision followed the earlier proclamation of a seven-day national mourning period by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government after receiving presidential approval.

According to the minister, the holiday was intended to pay tribute to the late president’s legacy of service, his role in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy, and his contributions to national development.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served this nation with sincerity, commitment, and a strong belief in unity and progress. The public holiday will give citizens an opportunity to reflect on the values he embodied throughout his life,” Dr Tunji-Ojo said.

He called on Nigerians to honour Buhari’s memory by embracing peace, unity, and patriotism—principles the former leader championed during his time in office.

As part of the national mourning, flags are to remain at half-mast for the duration of the seven-day observance, which began on Sunday, July 13.
