Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Amb Mariam Yalwaji Katagum had commended the immense contributions of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) towards the nation building.
A statement signed by Deputy Director Information, Kemi Ogunmakinwa said the Minister spoke while receiving in audience a team from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) led by the Assistant Director-General, Dr. Edward Kwakwa in Abuja.
Amb. Katagum thanked and appreciated the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for its excellent relationship with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
She acknowledged the capacities of the Trade Mark Registry and Patents and Designs Registry of the Ministry through the support of WIPO and said a lot still needed to be done for more collaboration between WIPO and the Ministry.
The Minister commended the support of WIPO through the validation of National Intellectual Property Policy for the growth of Micro,Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), stating that, the present administration also provided supports for the MSMEs to the tune of N75bn in order to cushion the effects of Covid-19 in the country.
She also appealed to WIPO to consider the size of Nigeria’s population and double its support for the country.
The Assistant Director-General of WIPO, Dr. Edward Kwakwa expressed his appreciation to the Minister and the Ministry for the excellent working relationship, stating that, the two Registrars of Trade Registry and Patents and Designs of the Ministry have been collaborating well with WIPO.
He said that the collaboration between the two parties (Ministry and WIPO) had put Nigeria on the Map of Intellectual Property on the African Continent.
