Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), faith-based societies, groups, and well-meaning individuals planning outreach activities during the upcoming Christmas and New Year festivities have been instructed to formally notify the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), or the Social Welfare Department of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration prior to accessing Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camps, Destitute, and Orphanage Homes within the six Area Councils of the FCT.
In an official statement Head, Public Affairs Federal Emergency Management Agency Nkechi Isa said this directive, issued to safeguard the wellbeing of vulnerable populations in the FCT, aimed to ensure proper documentation and profiling before the distribution of food and other consumables to indigent individuals.
Violations of this directive by any individuals, groups, societies, NGOs, or faith-based organizations will result in apprehension by security agencies and subsequent prosecution in accordance with the law.
Nkechi Isa said the necessity of this directive was underscored by recent media reports concerning the hospitalization of 200 pupils from a school in Osun State who fell ill after consuming food provided by an NGO.
In response to these concerns, the Acting Director General of FEMA, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim Sabo, emphasized the agency’s commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to guarantee a risk-free Christmas and New Year celebration.
Mr. Sabo urged residents of the FCT to exercise caution when accepting cooked food from groups or NGOs, emphasizing the importance of adhering to the official channels outlined in the directive.
He assured the public that FEMA is on high alert and encouraged individuals to contact the agency for useful information to avert potential threats and risks to life.
For inquiries and information, FEMA can be reached at the toll-free number 112 or via +234-8188888766.
