FCT-IRS moves to address staff concerns with promotions, training, and welfare reforms

The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service says it has begun implementing reforms to address staff concerns over promotions, welfare, and career progression.

Responding to agitation from some workers, the agency said the current management inherited longstanding issues but has revived stalled promotion processes and introduced new welfare and training measures.

Acting Executive Chairman Michael Ango said promotion examinations for eligible staff were held in December 2025 after years of stagnation. The results have been forwarded for statutory approval, and successful candidates will receive letters backdated to their eligibility dates once approved.

Discussions on salary reviews and improved remuneration packages are ongoing, the agency said, noting that such adjustments require approval from the FCT Minister and the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.

Outstanding allowances owed since 2021 have been cleared, and additional welfare measures were introduced to cushion the impact of fuel subsidy removal and rising living costs.

FCT-IRS also defended the temporary deployment of 12 personnel from the Nigeria Revenue Service, saying the move was meant to close technical gaps while internal capacity building continues.

To modernise operations, the agency said it has procured and distributed over 240 laptops in the last two years, compared to fewer than 100 functional computers previously available. Two new 30-seater staff buses will soon begin operations to ease transport difficulties caused by higher fuel costs.

Since August 2024, staff have participated in more than 105 local and international training programmes and conferences. The agency said every employee has had at least one training opportunity this year, and management is sponsoring professional body subscriptions to strengthen capacity.

FCT-IRS added that it facilitated the creation of a staff union to improve internal dialogue. The union has distanced itself from the ongoing protest and continues discussions with management through official channels.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to staff welfare and reforms aimed at improving productivity and revenue administration in the FCT.
