The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has brought charges against a former Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) employee.

Paulinus Iheanacho Okoronkwo is accused of receiving a staggering $2.1 million bribe during his tenure as an NNPC official, connected to favourable drilling rights negotiations for a Chinese state-owned oil company subsidiary.

Okoronkwo faces multiple counts including engaging in monetary transactions in property derived from specified unlawful activity, tax evasion, and obstruction of justice.

His trial is set to take place at the United States District Court in downtown Los Angeles within the upcoming weeks.

The indictment reveals that Okoronkwo, a dual citizen of the United States and Nigeria, held the position of General Manager of the Upstream Division at the NNPC when the illicit payments were made.

To disguise the nature of these bribes, the U.S. authorities allege that the Chinese company falsified records, claiming the payment represented fees for legal services.

This incident follows other notable cases involving corruption among NNPC employees, such as the conviction of ex-NNPC officials in relation to a $1.6 billion money laundering trial, and the acquittal of former Group Managing Director Andrew Yakubu following the seizure of $9.8 million from his residence.

These events highlight the persistent challenges faced by the Nigerian petroleum industry regarding transparency and integrity.
