A Max Air Boeing 737 (registration 5N-MBD) suffered a nose wheel landing gear collapse and a rear tyre burst while landing at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA) on January 28 at 22:50 hrs.
The aircraft, arriving on Runway 06/24, was carrying 53 passengers and six crew members.
In an official statement, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), confirmed that no injuries were recorded.
“We are grateful that all passengers and crew members onboard disembarked safely without any harm,” she stated.
Immediately following the incident, emergency responders, including airport rescue and firefighting services, were deployed to the scene.
FAAN confirmed that its emergency response plan was activated, ensuring the safety of everyone on board and preventing further disruptions. Medical personnel were on standby, but no passengers or crew required medical attention.
Authorities quickly worked to remove the aircraft from the runway, towing it to Bay 5 for further assessment and investigation.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced a probe into the incident to determine its root cause.
Aviation safety experts will inspect the aircraft’s landing gear and assess any other potential mechanical or operational issues.
As a precautionary measure, Runway 06/24 was temporarily closed to allow for thorough cleanup and safety inspections. FAAN confirmed that all debris was cleared, and the runway was declared safe for operations.
Normal flight activities resumed at 08:00 hrs on January 29, minimizing disruptions to scheduled flights.
The NSIB has assured the public that a detailed investigation will be conducted, and its findings will be made available to prevent future occurrences.
Preliminary reports are expected in the coming weeks, with recommendations to enhance aviation safety if necessary.
Passengers have been reassured of FAAN’s commitment to ensuring the highest safety standards at all Nigerian airports.
The authority urges travellers to remain calm.
