Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship candidate for Enugu State.
Nnaji polled 7,424 votes in Monday’s primary held in Enugu, defeating Samson Nnamani, who got 600 votes. The exercise was conducted by the Chairman of the PDP State Gubernatorial Committee, Austin Nwachukwu.
In his acceptance speech, Nnaji thanked party members for the mandate and pledged to ease the burden of taxation on residents if elected. He said landlords, hoteliers, commercial motorcyclists, and even street vendors were being overburdened with taxes.
“The struggle to recover Enugu State, the struggle to rebuild Enugu State and the struggle to industrialise Enugu State, so that we will arrest youth restiveness,” he said. He promised to build industries to create jobs and improve living conditions within four years, adding that he would serve only one term.
Nnaji said Jim Nwobodo was the last governor to establish industries in the state and described the alleged mismanagement of those facilities as unacceptable.
Nwachukwu commended party members for the orderly conduct of the primary and said the result showed the PDP was “positioned to win election in Enugu State in 2027.”
