The ongoing internal crisis within the Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated on Thursday with the resignation of Hon. Barr. Vincent Ose Akhere, a prominent figure in the party.

In a letter dated May 2, 2024, Hon. Akhere, who previously held significant positions including Council Chairman of Esan North East, PDP State Youth Leader, and State Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Tourism, formally announced his departure from the PDP.

Citing the persistent internal conflicts plaguing the party, Hon. Akhere expressed his deep regrets over the situation, emphasizing his inability to continue as a member amid the ongoing challenges.

The resignation underscores the severity of the internal divisions that have proven resistant to reconciliation efforts by party leadership.

Hon. Akhere’s departure signifies a significant loss for the party, given his extensive experience and contributions in various roles over the years.

In his letter, Hon. Akhere conveyed his appreciation to the State Chairman, party leaders at all levels, and fellow members across Edo State.

He acknowledged the opportunities granted to him to serve the party and its constituents in diverse capacities.

Hon. Akhere’s roles within the party included notable positions such as the Caretaker Chairman of Esan North East Local Government Council in 2007, Hon. Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Tourism in Edo State from January to November 2009, and other significant roles in party activities and campaigns.

In concluding his letter, Hon. Akhere expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts experienced at the Ward level and extended his highest regards to all recipients.

The resignation of such a prominent figure adds to the challenges facing the Edo PDP, raising questions about the party’s ability to navigate the internal strife and maintain its political relevance in the state.
