Etiebet Mourns Buhari, says he was a great Nigerian leader
The late General Muhammadu Buhari

A former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Chief Don Obot Etiebet, has mourned former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025 in a London hospital.

In a statement sent to THE CONCLAVE, Etiebet wrote: “I just read the sad post of Mallam Garba Shehu that His Excellency, General Muhammadu Buhari has passed on to eternal glory at 82 years of age.

“This is very, very sad indeed as Nigeria has lost a great leader of candour. He was a disciplined and steadfast leader personified in all areas of his service to the nation, who craved for a better society for Nigeria through his exemplary selfless services in all his callings in the military, public service and presidency.

“But his characteristic silence sometimes at crucial times was unfortunately misinterpreted for weakness.

Developing story: Former President Muhammadu Buhari is dead

“I was fortunate to work with him as the first ever National Chairman of the ANPP on which platform he first contested for the presidency in 2003 against a sitting President Olusegun Obasanjo in an election which the President himself declared ‘a do or die affair’.

“His acceptance by Nigerians and his die-hard supporters, in particular, dragged the outcome of that election to a split 4 to 3 Supreme Court decision against him in becoming President of Nigeria in 2003 but he persevered on and eventually made it 2015.

“He will sorely be missed as a great Nigerian leader.

“May his soul rest in peace. Amen.”
