Manchester United sealed third place in the Premier League with a 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Sunday in a game that had everything.
Luke Shaw gave United the perfect start, slotting home in the 5th minute to put the hosts ahead. Under interim manager Michael Carrick, United looked in control for most of the first half and took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Forest came out firing in the second half. Morato equalized in the 53rd minute with a header from a corner. The lead didn’t last long — Matheus Cunha restored United’s advantage five minutes later, tapping in after a scramble in the box. VAR checked and confirmed the goal.
Bryan Mbeumo extended United’s lead to 3-1 in the 78th minute, finishing calmly after a neat pass from Bruno Fernandes. Forest refused to fold, and Morgan Gibbs-White pulled one back moments later to set up a tense finish.
United held on through heavy late pressure. Diogo Dalot nearly put the game to bed in stoppage time, but his strike hit the post. The final whistle confirmed all three points and third place with one game left to play.
The result caps a strong turnaround under Carrick, who has guided United back into the Champions League.
It was also an emotional afternoon for Casemiro. The Brazilian received a standing ovation after being substituted in the second half, in what is likely to be his final home appearance for the club.
