The Emerging Political Leaders Movement (EPL) has congratulated the newly appointed Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC), 40-year old, Abdulrasheed Bawa, “who goes down in history as the youngest Nigerian to superintend over such sensitive agency.”
The group, in a statement by its Convener, Wale Ajani, said the new anti-graft boss, had spent the last 16 years within the establishment, having joined EFCC as an Assistant Detective Superintendent in 2004, and rising to his most recent position as a zonal head of the agency.
He was few days ago confirmed by the Nigerian Senate.
“This is unprecedented! As a group who believe there is the need to begin to alter the existing political and economic protocols in this country, we are particularly excited by the nomination, and eventual confirmation of Mr. Bawa as the new head of the anti-graft agency.
“We like to commend Mr President for appointing such a young and dynamic emerging leader.
“It is our belief that this is only a sign of what to come, as we expect Mr President and our governors across the nation to continue to appoint young, dynamic and upwardly mobile young leaders into position of authority. Thank you, Mr President!
“While congratulating Mr Bawa for this historic appointment, which is a confirmation of the potential of young Nigerians, it is our belief that he will not disappoint Nigerians.
:His failure would constitute a huge disappointment for the teeming population of Nigeria’s youth and emerging political leaders.
“Bawa must take the bull by the horns. He must act fast and ensure a quick repositioning of the anti-graft agency.
:A new order in the EFCC operations, devoid of the scandals of the recent past associated with the leadership of the EFCC must be created.
:He must work hard to restore trust in the anti-corruption agency, bringing to bear his experiences over the years as a top operative of EFCC.
“We must also commend the leadership of the Nigerian Senate, for such a wonderful job done in confirming Mr. Bawa, after only two ours of cross examinations by members of the upper chamber. This is quite encouraging.”
With his confirmation, Mr Abdullahi Bawa would now assume office as the substantive chairman, taking over from Mohammed Umar, who had been acting in place of the ousted former EFCC boss, Ibrahim Magu.
