Former U.S. Vice President and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden, said the U.S. must stand with Nigerians “who are peacefully demonstrating for police reform and seeking an end to corruption in their democracy.”
According to Biden, “My heart goes out to all those who have lost a loved one in the violence.”
Biden’s positions were contained in a statement published on his official campaign website.
The statement came on the heels of security agents shooting protesters on Tuesday night in Lagos.
Biden said that the Nigerian government should engage in a good-faith dialogue with civil society to address the “long-standing grievances and work together for a more just and inclusive Nigeria.”
He stated: “I urge President Buhari and the Nigerian military to cease the violent crackdown on protesters in Nigeria, which has already resulted in several deaths.”
