In a fresh twist to the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, the Federal Capital Territory High Court has put the brakes on the testimony of three crucial prosecution witnesses—pending a decision from the Court of Appeal.
Justice Hamza Muazu, presiding over the matter on Thursday, November 27, 2025, held that he could not permit the witnesses to take the stand until the appellate court rules on an earlier challenge concerning their eligibility.
Emefiele is facing a 20-count amended charge brought by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, which borders on alleged abuse of office, criminal breach of trust, corruption, and fraud.
During Thursday’s session, lead prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), attempted to present three subpoenaed witnesses.
But Justice Muazu reminded the court that the individuals in question were among those listed in an additional proof of evidence that he had struck out on March 20—a ruling the prosecution has since appealed.
According to Justice Muazu, “the ruling of March 20 is now the subject of an appeal.
“This court cannot change its own decision by allowing these subpoenaed witnesses to testify.
“The prosecution must wait for the decision of the Court of Appeal.”
The case has been adjourned to January 29, 2026, for continuation of hearing.
