Musk becomes first person to hit $500 billion net worth, Forbes list shows
Elon Musk

Elon Musk has made history as the first person to cross the $1 trillion net worth mark, at least on paper, following the pricing of SpaceX’s long-awaited initial public offering at $135 per share.

The milestone pushes Musk’s fortune past a psychological and economic barrier never reached by an individual, underscoring the unprecedented scale of wealth concentrated in the hands of today’s tech tycoons.

Before the IPO, Musk’s net worth was estimated at about $813 billion by Forbes, already more than double that of Google co-founder Larry Page, whose wealth stands at $288 billion.

The official pricing of SpaceX shares at $135 each nudged Musk’s net worth slightly above the trillion-dollar threshold.

SpaceX stock is set to trade under the ticker “SPCX” and will begin trading on the Nasdaq Composite on Friday at 9:30 a.m. His fortune could climb higher if shares trade above the IPO price, but a decline could also pull his net worth back below $1 trillion.

—How the numbers add up—

According to SpaceX’s IPO filing, Musk owns roughly 4.8 billion shares, about 42 percent of the company, plus 350 million stock options exercisable at $8.39 per share.

At $135 per share, his stake is valued at about $648 billion, while the options add another $44.3 billion. Forbes had previously valued his pre-IPO SpaceX holdings at around $500 billion. The IPO pricing therefore adds roughly $192.3 billion to his SpaceX valuation, lifting his estimated total net worth to about $1.005 trillion.

The SpaceX listing is also expected to create significant wealth for employees and early investors. The New York Times reports that about 4,400 SpaceX employees could become millionaires when trading begins, though Musk remains the biggest beneficiary due to his controlling stake.

—A trillion-dollar benchmark—

A trillion dollars is comparable to the annual GDP of some of the world’s largest economies. World Bank data shows only 19 countries have GDPs above $1 trillion, including the United States and the Netherlands.

The milestone has reignited debate on global wealth inequality. Oxfam America’s senior director of economic justice, Nabil Ahmed, described Musk’s rise as symbolic of a widening gap between the ultra-wealthy and the rest of society.

“Elon Musk’s rise to trillionaire status marks a new pinnacle of oligarchy,” Ahmed said.

Oxfam also noted that Musk’s wealth now exceeds the combined assets of the bottom 46 percent of the global population, about 3.8 billion people.

Whether Musk holds the trillion-dollar title will depend on SpaceX’s market performance in the days ahead, but the moment itself marks a new chapter in the story of modern wealth.
