Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, claimed that some persons at the presidential villa wanted the All Progressives Congress (APC) to lose the presidential election.
The presidential election is scheduled for February 25.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television programme, on Wednesday, the governor said some elements were bent on inflicting hardship on the citizenry through some policies so as to foil APC’s chances in the election.
He said these “elements” wanted the APC to lose the election because they lost at the party’s primaries.
There has been a hue and cry over the scarcity of petrol and new naira notes. The problem has persisted for months.
In October, the Central Bank of Nigeria announced that the old 200, 500 and 1000 naira notes would cease to be legal tender by January 31. But the bank extended the deadline to February 10 after protests by citizens.
However, it has been difficult to get the new naira notes as long lines of people wait in banks.
Responding to the issues, el-Rufai said: “I believe there are elements in the villa that want us to lose the elections because their didn’t get their way; their candidate didn’t win primaries, and they are hiding behind the president’s desire to do what is right.
“Nigerians should know that these policies are not policies of our party but some economists who are bent on making sure that we lose the election. Policies purposely designed to crash the political process.”
