Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai has alleged that Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, ordered his arrest, claiming the directive was uncovered through intercepted phone communications.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News Channel on Friday, el-Rufai said his associates monitored conversations that linked Ribadu to the alleged plan.

“Ribadu made the call and gave the order that they should arrest me,” he said, adding that while such interceptions might be illegal, authorities routinely carried out similar surveillance.

“The government thinks they’re the only ones that listen to calls. But we also have our ways.”

el-Rufai further accused the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission of working with the Department of State Services to target him, alleging that both agencies were being used to execute Ribadu’s directives.

He described the ICPC as increasingly operating as a “personal tool” of the NSA.

However, the former governor praised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for what he called a more professional approach, saying he intends to honour its invitation for questioning.

“But the EFCC has shown itself to be more professional in this instance. By the grace of God, I’ll go and see them,” he said.

During the interview, el-Rufai also addressed questions about the disappearance of social media commentator Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata, who was abducted in 2019.

He denied any involvement and dismissed claims that his administration played a role.

According to him, the activist was more critical of political figures in Kano than in Kaduna State, suggesting that inquiries should be directed elsewhere.

Authorities have yet to respond publicly to the allegations.
