Former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has lost his cousin, Mathias Ekweremadu, who was until his death, the Commissioner for Transport, Enugu State.
Witnesses said Mathias slumped while defending the budget of his ministry.
He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, Niger Foundation, where doctors battled for over an hour to resuscitate him but to no avail.
The cause of his death had yet to be ascertained as of the time of publishing this report..
A medical progessional said this would only be known if the family requested an autopsy.
A source said that “The family will have a meeting after which they will issue a statement.”
Mathias Ekweremadu served as chairman of Aninri Local Government Council. He was subsequently elected into the Enugu State House of Assembly in 2015 and served for one term.
Ekweremadu is a recipient of the national honour, Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
Senator Ekweremadu reportedly received the news in Dubai, where he is attending a meeting of International Parliament for Tolerance and Peace (IPTP).
