Defection of two bigwigs of the Ekiti All Progressive Congress(APC) has further depleted the ranks of the ruling party as the Ekiti governorship election draws nearer.
Two notable chieftains of the party, Chief Bimbo Daramola, former member of the House of Representatives and Senior Special Assistant to the state governor on Political Matters, Mr Taye Olatunji, on Wednesday led about 2,600 of their supporters to join the Social Democratic Party (SDP) at their respective wards in their local government areas.
According to a press statement made available by the Director of Media and Publicity of Segun Oni Campaign Organisation (SOCO), Mr Jackson Adebayo, in Ado Ekiti on Thursday, while Daramola declared and registered for membership of the SDP at Ward 2, Ire Ekiti in Oye Local Government, Mr Olatunji joined the party at Ido/Osi Local Government
Daramola, who until his resignation from the party was a member of the APC national campaign committee for the governorship candidate in Ekiti state, said he joined the SDP because APC had failed the people.
The former legislator said, “what I am doing today, I am not making a mistake and its not a guess work, it’s a well-thought-out plan.”
He praised the SDP governorship candidate and former governor of the state, Asiwaju Segun Oni, saying, “when Segun Oni served as governor, Ekiti was better. He was paying salaries as and when due; he was humble and he carried everyone along unlike the current system where people of the state were subjected to hardship.”
Daramola further described Oni as “a man of honour, a true leader who served with fairness and integrity which is why he enjoys the massive support.”
The former federal lawmaker said that “under the Ekiti APC-led government, I see many people suffering, there is hardship everywhere, insecurity, pensioners are crying for help, riding Okada is the only white collar job in Ekiti
“I’m not happy with the current situation in Ekiti. For these and many other reasons, I join SDP today to rescue Ekiti from the hands of people who doesn’t feel concerned about the wellbeing of Ekiti people.
Also at Irepodun/Ifelodun, Peoples Democratic Party members led by their chairman in their hundreds decamped to the Social Democratic Party in the build up to the June 18 governorship election.”
The chairman of the party, Chief Famoroti Samuel said that they decided to join the party because of the antecedents of Asiwaju Segun Oni upon which every son and daughter of Ekiti state is so proud of to the extent that no government could be compared with his till date.
Others members of the PDP executives that followed him included Mr Famakinde Ilesanmi- Vice Chairman Fasuan Seun- LG Ex Officio Anise Bayo- Legal Adviser, Akinola Sunday- Auditor, Oguntoyinbo Alaba- Olubisi Sanyan- Ex Officio.
