The PDP Renaissance Group, a pressure group within Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called on the state chairman of the party and a governorship aspirant for the 2022 election, Chief Bisi Kolawole, to resign his position or face the wrath of members.
The group said his continued stay as chairman was unfair to other governorship aspirants in the PDP.
The group in a statement said this amounted to gross abuse of office.
The group argued that for him to continue as chairman of the party and at the same time aspire to be governorship candidate of the party was detrimental to cohesion of the party in the state.
The group called out former governor of the state, Ayo Fayose, who is believed to be a major backer of Mr Kolawole, that the action of the chairman was against the spirit of democracy.
The group’s statement reads:
“The Ekiti PDP Renaissance Group has observed the continuous personalisation of the Ekiti state chapter of PDP by Chief Bisi Kolawole, who is grossly abusing his office as Chairman to further a Dead-on-Arrival governorship ambition.
“Although we view the governorship bid of Chief Kolawole as “dead on arrival”, we concede his right to seek for the office.
“That notwithstanding, we observed that rather than resign as Chairman to face his governorship interest, Mr Kolawole instead elected to use the apparatchik of his office as Chairman to further his ambition at the detriment of other aspirants, which is against the spirit of democracy and fair play.
“Mr Kolawole has also continued to betray the trust and mandate of Ekiti PDP by his flagrant refusal to work for the growth of the party due to his ambition and his retinue of not too effective members of the State Working Committee that only remember the State party secretariat exists with their ones in a month meeting instead of the mandatorily stipulated at least twice in a month meeting of the State Working Committee.
“We hereby, given the aforementioned, state our strong rejection of the conduct of Mr Kolawole. And by extension his members of redundant State Working Committee. The Party can not be this unserious and expected to win the 2022 governorship election in Ekiti. While the masses are ready for us, we are unnecessarily flirting with the supposed chances of returning the Party to power.
“We further demand the immediate open resignation of the State Chairman, suspension or impeachment (if he fails to resign) as party chairman.
“We want to put the party leadership on notice that failure of Mr Kolawole to resign, we shall mobilise party members to forcefully evict him. The group made it clear that a request will be sent to the PDP zonal executive and the National Working Committee to look and act fast on this issue.
“We stand a chance of winning the 2022 governorship election if the party activities are made spontaneous and we will not allow our chances to be sacrificed on the altar of the inordinate ambition of the party’s chairman and few self-centred leaders.”
