In a major crackdown on cybercrime, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Benin Zonal Directorate arrested 46 suspected internet fraudsters in Warri, Delta State, on Sunday, September 8, 2024. The operation, conducted at various locations across the city, was based on credible intelligence about the suspects’ involvement in internet-related fraud activities.
According to the EFCC, the arrests were part of ongoing efforts to combat the rising wave of cybercrime in the region. The suspects, all of whom are young men, were apprehended in possession of 13 exotic cars, numerous laptops, and mobile phones believed to be tools used in perpetrating their fraudulent activities.
The seized vehicles, which include luxury brands, underscore the scale and profitability of the alleged crimes.
“The arrest of these individuals is a testament to our commitment to ridding society of internet fraud and cybercrime,” an EFCC spokesperson said.
“We will continue to pursue all leads and ensure that anyone involved in such criminal activities is brought to justice.”
The EFCC has assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that the suspects will be charged to court as soon as they are concluded.
The commission also urged members of the public to provide information that could assist in identifying and apprehending other individuals involved in similar illegal activities.
This latest operation highlights the EFCC’s intensified efforts in combating internet fraud, which has become a significant concern in Delta State and other parts of Nigeria.
The commission reiterated its zero-tolerance stance towards all forms of financial crimes and called for public cooperation in the fight against cybercriminals.
