The Government of Edo is excited that corporate bodies have begun to identify with the state to help promote and develop sports, an official said on Thursday in Benin.
Sabina Chikere, the Permanent Secretary of Edo Sports Commission, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), that one example of this was through a shirt sponsorship deal.
She said the state-owned Edo Queens Female Football Club have secured a N35 million shirt sponsorship deal with Peculiar Ultimate Consult, an engineering firm.
The company will kit the Edo Queens who are currently playing in the Nigeria Women Premiership League (NWPL), the elite division of the Nigeria women football league.
Chikere added that the deal would also see the team play their matches with the logo of the firm printed on their kits.
“I am indeed excited that we are getting recognition for our efforts at developing sports, not just football.
“It is also very heartwarming to see a reputable firm such as Peculiar Ultimate Consult identifying with us. It is a big morale-booster for Edo Queens and indeed the state.
“While we appreciate the sponsorship deal, we are however not unaware that it is a call for us to work harder, perhaps go on to play on the continent,” she said.(NAN)
