The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a man, Kelvin Izekor, for the alleged murder of his wife, Success Izekor, who was 38 years old.
A video circulating online captures police officers and bystanders moving the deceased’s body, which had deep machete wounds on the head, from their residence into a police vehicle.
The incident has shocked the community, especially as the couple had only recently tied the knot.
A resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed disbelief, saying, “It’s heartbreaking. They were newlyweds, and no one could have imagined such a terrible fate.”
The spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.
He disclosed that an angry mob was about to lynch the suspect before law enforcement officers intervened.
“On February 22, 2025, around 10 p.m., we received information that Kelvin Izekor, residing at No. 50 Upper Mission Extension, Benin City, had allegedly killed his wife. Officers from Aduwawa Division immediately responded and found the woman’s body in a pool of blood with severe head injuries,” Yamu stated.
He explained that it took significant effort to pacify the irate crowd before police could safely take the suspect into custody.
The victim was later transported to a hospital, where she was confirmed dead.
The Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, condemned the rising cases of domestic violence and assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted.
She emphasized that those responsible would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
