The visit, according to a report by GWG, was, in spite of a public warning in July 2025 by Governor Monday Okpebholo to Peter Obi, against visiting the state he swept in the 2023 presidential election by more than 52%.

Reports said that Obi polled 331,163 votes as against the 144,471 votes polled by President Bola Tinubu.

Obi, who is widely regarded as one of the potential contenders for the 2027 presidential election, has continued to tour schools and institutions across the country, often making donations to support education and healthcare training.

The visit comes amid political tensions in Edo State. Governor Monday Okpebholo had earlier pledged to deliver 3.5 million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the state. Obi’s presence in Edo has also been a subject of controversy in the past.

In 2025, Obi visited a School of Nursing in the state and made a financial donation, after which Governor Okpebholo reportedly warned him not to visit Edo without prior approval from the state government.

Despite the political undertones, Obi’s visit to St. Philomena Catholic College was received with excitement by students and staff, who expressed gratitude for the donation and his show of support for education.

However, as at the time of this report, the Edo state governor, Monday Okpebholo, has yet to make any official statement on Peter Obi’s visit to the state. [GWG]
