Edo govt shuts three schools as DSS uncovers bandit plot to abduct students

The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following intelligence of a kidnap threat against students.

The directive was contained in a circular dated June 9, 2026, issued by the State Ministry of Education and signed by Permanent Secretary Enodolomwanyi Otamere.

The closure follows a security report by the Department of State Services, DSS.

–Schools affected–

The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School and Makeke Secondary School, all in Edo North Senatorial District.

Otamere said the DSS intercepted communications between two suspected bandits discussing plans to target school children after failed attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals.

–DSS intelligence details–

According to the memo sent to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, the suspects believed abducting students would attract government attention and increase chances of securing ransom payments and concessions.

The report revealed that a 25-year-old suspect was arrested on June 4 while allegedly conducting surveillance around Makeke Secondary School. That incident heightened fears that preparations for the planned operation were underway.

The DSS advised Edo government to strengthen security around schools, especially in Edo North, and recommended additional personnel, joint patrols and closer collaboration with vigilante groups and hunters.

–WASSCE to continue under security–

Otamere said all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools are suspended until further notice to protect lives and property.

However, candidates sitting the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, will be allowed access to exam centres under strict security arrangements.

“Candidates currently participating in WASSCE shall be allowed access to sit for their examinations under strict security arrangements and supervision,” Otamere stated.

He directed principals to release students orderly to parents and guardians, secure facilities and maintain close communication with government and security agencies.

Parents and residents were urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to neutralise the threat.
