The Edo State Government has confirmed that the process of compensating families of the 16 hunters killed in Uromi in March is ongoing.
The victims, who were returning to Kano State from Port Harcourt, were lynched by vigilantes in Uromi, Esan North-East Local Government Area, on March 28, 2025 over suspicions of being kidnappers.
They were later identified as hunters from Torankawa in Bunkure, Kibiya, Garko, and Rano LGAs of Kano State.
Governor Monday Okpebholo had promised compensation during a condolence visit to the affected families, accompanied by his Kano State counterpart.
Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, said the government was working closely with leaders of the Arewa community to identify the rightful beneficiaries.
“There is an ongoing verification process to ensure that compensation goes to the genuine families of the victims,” he said. “It’s a thorough but necessary step to prevent impersonation.”
Itua added that both Edo and Kano State governments remained in close communication to see the process through.
“This is not a political promise. The governor is sincere about it, and the compensation process is nearing completion,” he emphasised.
