Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has directed the immediate swearing in of the three state High Court judges that former Governor Godwin Obaseki refused to swear in.

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Umar Musa Ikhilor, Esq, said: “It is to be announced for the information of the general public [sic] that the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo has approved the immediate swearing in of the three outstanding State High court Judges-designate to hold on Monday, 2 December, 2024 at 1.00pm at the State Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Benin City.

“It would be recalled that the three judges-designate, Ojo Maureen Osa, Godwin Jeff Okundamiya and Edoghogho Eboigbe, were among the eight candidates cleared and recommended for appointment as Judges in the State Judiciary by the National Judicial Council in June 2023 but were however left out during the swearing in process in May, 2024 by the Administration of former Governor Godwin Obaseki.

“This decision by His Excellency is to reiterate his ardent belief in upholding the rule of Law, respect for the principle of the doctrine of Separation of Powers as enshrined in our Constitution and strengthen the judiciary to deliver on its mandate of justice and fairness to the generality of the public.”
