The Edo state All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has congratulated His Royal Majesty, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, and the entire Benin Kingdom on the return of 39 artefacts by the Swedish Government.

In al statement he signed, Senator Okpebholo said the reign of Oba Ewuare II marked a significant turning point in the history of the Benin Kingdom.

He said the news of the artefacts’ return was a testament to your exceptional efforts in redefining African cultural heritage both as a diplomat and royal leader.

“The return of these artifacts, 127 years after they were stolen, highlights the resilience of African heritage against colonial plunder. We celebrate your perseverance at this historic moment.

“As Nigeria’s Ambassador, you skillfully advocated for the return of these stolen treasures from across Europe, demonstrating profound diplomatic acumen. We are immensely proud of your achievements.

“We will continue to support His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, in his initiatives to preserve our cultural heritage. Under my leadership as Governor of Edo state, we will respect and engage the traditional institutions for the state’s benefit,” Okpebholo said.

He condemned those who had obstructed the rightful return of these artefacts to the Benin Palace, adding that their actions were regrettable and disrespectful to our heritage.

Senator Okpebholo also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support and collaboration on the Benin Royal Museum project, “which promises to boost tourism in Edo state and Nigeria.”

He said his team would leverage the traditional institution’s experience to govern Edo state effectively.

“We will uphold the truth and support the Benin monarch for the collective benefit of our people. We are honored to celebrate His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II, for his historic contributions. We pray for his continued wisdom, health, and prosperity for the benefit of Edo state and Nigeria. Oba ghato kpere ise. Long live the Oba of Benin! Long live Nigeria,” Okpebholo said.
