Edo 2024: Dep Gov candidates promise loyalty, collaboration with bosses to promote good governance in Debate

The various deputy governorship candidates of the political parties contesting the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election in Edo State, Thursday, vowed to support their bosses if elected.

They made this commitment during the Independent Television and Radio (ITV/Radio), organized debate for the deputy governorship dandidates in the Edo 2024 governorship election in Benin, yesterday.

Among the deputy governorship candidates who participated in the debate were African Democratic Congress, ADC, Philip Osagie, New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Edith Isopkan, All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Comrade Bello Aneru, Labour Party, LP, Yusuf Asamah Kadiri, and African Action Congress, AAC, Sir Lord Osas Osunde.

On their role as deputy they admitted they will complement their principals in bringing about the needed development to the state..

They also said they will ensure the state resources are efficiently managed to better the life of Edo people, emphasizing that they would from time to time act as pillar of support to their principal the governor.

On what usually cause rancour between the deputies and governors, they said it is always as a result of lack of trust and understanding. They also noted that such quarrels usually result at the twilight of the end of their final tenure when the governor would have started shopping for a trusted successor aside his deputy.

They agreed that in this case the deputies must learn to be patient with their bosses and show loyalty as much as possible to engender a conducive operational environment that would ensure good governance that will benefit the people.

They opined that the governors usually suspect their deputies when they feel they are not loyal and knowing they benefit from the woes of their principals in the event of impeachment or death.

They, however, said that to establish a good working relationship, they must understand the basic principles of work ethics. But they said if there is any crisis the ability to manage same is what is important.

On ways to support their bosses to generate internal revenue and improve on the economy, they all agreed that the prevailing economic situation was not anything to write home about.

They unanimously agreed that there is need to quickly inject good and workable ideas that can assist in improving on the economy, as that is the only way the government will be able to create jobs for the teaming youths through the establishment of industries in the state.

They equally promised to look into the areas of attracting investors to the state to help boost the state’s economy.

On how to strengthen the security architecture of the state they promised to set up a formidable security network that will take care of the security needs of the people especially those in the rural areas.

They, however, said such security outfit should not be politically oriented, adding that if it is political it would not achieve the desire results.

On their respective messages to the Edo people, they advised the electorates to beware of politicians who have been recycled severally as they no longer have any thing tangible to offer to the people.

In his closing remarks, the Managing Director of ITV Television and Radio, Engr. Elvis Obaseki, saluted the courage of the candidates present in offering themselves to serve in that capacity.

He added that ITV/Radio would not take them for granted as they will always play their role as media organizations to support them.
