The Department of State Services (DSS) has issued a formal demand to activist and publisher of SaharaReporters, Omoyele Sowore, over what it described as a “false, malicious and criminal” comment made about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on social media.
In a letter dated September 7, 2025, and signed by Uwem Davies on behalf of the Director General of the Service, Sowore was accused of making a derogatory post on X (formerly Twitter) on August 26, 2025, at 11:38 p.m.
The post in question allegedly read: “This criminal actually went to Brazil to state that there is NO MORE corruption under his regime in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”
The Service stated that Sowore’s remarks were not only injurious to the President’s reputation but also capable of inciting public disorder, disunity, and a breakdown of law and order.
The Service further warned that such comments could fuel insurrection and damage Nigeria’s image internationally.
The security agency directed Sowore to immediately retract the post on the same platform with equal prominence, issue a public apology in at least two national newspapers and two television stations, and make a formal representation at the DSS Headquarters in Abuja or via email within one week.
According to the Service, “Persons of your status who are campaigning to lead this country must be of high integrity and exercise restraint and responsibility in their speech and actions.”
The DSS also cautioned that failure to comply with its demands would leave it with no choice but to take “all lawful measures” within its mandate to address the matter.
Copies of the letter were forwarded to the United States Embassy in Abuja.
