Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has urged Team Bayelsa to defend its championship title at the upcoming second edition of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Games, as the state’s contingent departed Yenagoa for Benin City, Edo State.
The governor issued the charge during the weekly Prosperity Walk at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, where he reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to advancing sports in the state.

Diri highlighted Bayelsa’s ambition to host major sporting events in the future, pointing to the ongoing construction of a 30,000-capacity ultra-modern stadium at Igbogene as a cornerstone of that strategy.
He called on the athletes and officials to stay disciplined and focused, noting the team’s defending champion status from the inaugural edition and expressing strong confidence in their performance despite changes in age categories this year.
“We came first in the maiden edition of the NDDC Games,” Diri said. “I charge Team Bayelsa to maintain that first position and bring a very good name to the state.”
The Bayelsa delegation includes a strong lineup of 270 athletes competing in 16 sports, supported by 46 coaches. The team is also accompanied by 12 officials, 16 management members (with six traveling and 10 staying in Yenagoa), five media personnel, and a four-member liaison committee.
