Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has reportedly been arrested.

The news was shared by a fellow activist and convener of Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju, on one of his social media handles.

Adeyanju, who disclosed the arrest on his Facebook page, had earlier posted that Nigerians were gathering at Lagos International Airport in anticipation of Sowore’s arrival.

“Nigerians have started arriving at Lagos International Airport to welcome Omoyele Sowore,” Adeyanju stated.

Sowore had previously criticized the Department of State Services (DSS) for placing him on a “higher watchlist.”

He shared a DSS signal dated August 16, 2024, which instructed security operatives to arrest him upon his return to Nigeria.

The directive, signed by Adeola Ali, called for Sowore to be immediately escorted to the DSS National Headquarters upon his arrival.

Defiantly, Sowore announced his intention to return to Nigeria soon, despite the DSS orders.

In a statement, he criticized the current administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for its inefficiency in addressing security threats like terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping while targeting political activists.

Sowore remarked, “The DSS has upgraded my watchlist status for arrest upon arrival in Nigeria. However, Nigeria needs salvation, and the people need liberation. We won’t stop just because a few misguided individuals are running the country. I will return home VERY SOON.”

As the situation unfolded, Adeyanju shared another update, saying, “More comrades are arriving at Lagos International Airport to welcome Omoyele Sowore.”

He also praised Sowore’s dedication, stating, “Omoyele Sowore is a unique figure; there can only be one or two Sowores in every generation.”

Adeyanju later confirmed the arrest, writing, “Sowore has been arrested by the Nigerian government for calling for an End to Bad Governance protest.”

Recall that on August 1, 2024 to August 10, 2024, Nigerians took to the streets to protest against the rising prices of essential commodities and other economic hardships.
