Developing: NEMA rescues eight persons as three-storey building collapses in Kano

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has rescued eight persons from a three-storey building that collapsed on Beirut Road at a popular GSM market in Kano metropolis.

The building collapsed on Tuesday, 30th August, 2022 around 03:05pm.

In a statement, Head, NEMA Press Unit Abuja, Manzo Ezekiel, said the agency was alerted to the incident and it immediately mobilised emergency responders to the site for rescue operations.

He said NEMA Search-and- Rescue team from the Agency’s Kano Territorial Office was also deployed in the location to reinforce and coordinate the rescue.

According to Manzo, as at 9:10pm this night (Tuesday, August 30, 2022, eight (8) persons had been rescued and taken to Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital.

“Sadly, one of them was confirmed dead by doctors at the hospital, six with minor injuries were treated and discharged.

“However, one of them that sustained major injuries with multiple fractures is still being treated at the hospital.”

He added that the search- and-rescue operations were still ongoing to rescue those trapped beneath the rubble.

Manzo said the operations was being carried out jointly by search-and-rescue teams of NEMA, Kano State Emergency Management Agency, Fire Service, Nigerian Police, the military, Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, State Road Transport Authority (KAROTA), Nigerian Red Cross Society, and others.

He said the collapsed building was under reconstruction as additional floors were being added to the existing structure.
