Developing: 279 Zamfara schoolgirls released, says report

279 (of the) abducted Zamfara schoolgirls have been released, the News Agency of Nigeria report is trending.

The students arrived Government House, Gusau, about 4 a.m. on Tuesday, March 2, 2021.

The governor, Bello Matawalle, has reportedly confirmed the release of the girls in a BBC interview.

He said the state government did not pay ransom and that the girls were all hake and hearty.

The governor urged the federal government  to recruit more security personnel to beef up security surveillance countrywide.

The governor, in a tweet,said: “Alhamdulillah! It gladdens my heart to announce the release of the abducted students of GGSS Jangebe from captivity. This follows the scaling of several hurdles laid against our efforts. I enjoin all well-meaning Nigerians to rejoice with us as our daughters are now safe.”

He said he and his wife were at the Government House Gusau, receiving the freed schoolgirls who were conveyed to the state capital in buses.

Governor Bello commended the government officials that took part in the negotiations that led to the release of the female students.

Recall that 317 schoolgirls of Government Girks Secondary School Jangebe in Zamfara were kidnapped from their school Friday  last week. Seven of them had reportedly broken the breach and escaped from the kidnappers den.

The latest news about their release is coming on the heels of reports two days ago that they had been released.

The State Government and the Police had, as of then, swiftly put a lie to the report.
