Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has stated that the petroleum products from Dangote Refinery and other modular refineries are of inferior quality compared to imported ones.

LDangote Refinery’s Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) has a higher sulphur content than the West African requirement of 50 parts per million (PPM), according to the Chief Executive Officer of NMDPRA, Farouk Ahmed.

“Dangote Refinery, as well as some modular refineries like Watersmith Refinery and Aradel Refinery, are producing between 650 and 1,200 PPM. Therefore, in terms of quality, their products are inferior to imported ones,” Ahmed said.

Ahmed also clarified that the Dangote Refinery has not been issued an operational license by NMDPRA and is still in the pre-commissioning stage, about 45% completed.

He emphasised that relying solely on the Dangote Refinery for petroleum products would compromise energy security and create a monopoly.

“We cannot rely on one refinery to feed the nation… That is not good for the nation in terms of energy security, and it is not good for the market because of the monopoly,” Ahmed said.
