Cross River State has isolated 10 people who had contact with a Chinese national diagnosed with COVID-19, the state’s first confirmed case in years.

State epidemiologist Dr. Inyang Ekpenyong said the 10 were identified during contact tracing at the Chinese national’s workplace in Akamkpa Local Government Area. They are under home isolation to prevent further spread.

“We’ve restricted their movements to their homes, so that they do not spread the symptoms to other persons,” Ekpenyong told reporters.

The patient is being treated at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital and is “responding to treatment,” she said.

Commissioner for Health Dr. Henry Egbe Ayuk announced the resurgence of COVID-19 in the state on Monday. He said public health mechanisms have been activated to contain it.

“COVID-19 is not peculiar to Nigeria. But we’re determined to contain it. There’s no cause for alarm,” Ayuk said. He warned that global travel means “the world was at risk of another health challenge.”

Ekpenyong reminded residents that COVID-19 “has not been totally eliminated” since it emerged six years ago. She urged regular hand sanitising, use of face masks, and adherence to expert guidelines.
