Court sentences two suspects for cybercrime in Kwara

Two individuals have been convicted for engaging in cybercrime in Kwara State.

Francis Stephen Oke Eghele, a 24-year-old, posed as a female American to defraud unsuspecting victims.

He was found guilty, alongside Adeniyi Adekunle Aliyu from Iworoko, Ado Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area of Ekiti State, who committed a similar offence.

The charges were brought against them by the Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

During the court proceedings, both Francis and Adeniyi pleaded guilty to their respective charges.

The EFCC, represented by Anselm Ozioko (Jnr) and Isabel Adeniran, presented evidence and urged the court to convict the defendants based on their confessions and the evidence presented.

Justice Adenike Akinpelu of the Kwara State High Court delivered the verdict.

Francis was sentenced to six months imprisonment on each of the first two counts.

He was also given the option to pay a fine of N100,000 (One Hundred Thousand Naira Only) for each count.

Additionally, the court ordered the forfeiture of the Infinix phone used by Francis to commit the crime to the Federal Government.

Adeniyi was sentenced to six months imprisonment, with the option to pay a fine of N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira Only).

The court also ordered the forfeiture of several items, including a Nokia phone, an HP laptop, and the Infinix phone used in the criminal activities.

Furthermore, the sum of N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira Only), which he gained from the unlawful activities, was to be forfeited to the Federal Government.
